Crawfordsville KOA; Full of Unique Amenities

We are always looking for weekend get-a-ways. Different campgrounds that aren’t too far away just far enough to feel like we are escaping for a few days.  One of these gems that we stumbled upon was the Crawfordsville KOA.  Since we always bring our koacrawfordsvillepmdogs with us we love when a place is particularly pet friendly. You can tell just by walking in the door and seeing the big basket of dog treats that your four legged best friend will be welcomed with open arms. In addition they also offer a pet walking service at this campground. The campground also offers a lovely pool as well as a book exchange program and offers free wifi and cable tv at full hookup sites.  With the well kept landscaping and friendly staff this is a campground certainly worth checking out!

Lake Monroe: A Beautiful Place to Stay

As you may know by now I am a huge proponent of anything Southern Indiana.  I love the area, the sites, and friendliness of the people.  With that being said there is a campground down on Monroe Reservoir called Lake Monroe Village which is a fully lakemonroepmequipped beautiful destination for RVers.  They have an array of sites to choose from including their VIP sites that come with a patio to complement your RV.  In addition to all of the fun water activities that can take place on Lake Monroe, Lake Monroe Village offers a comfort station with no-charge showers and plenty of hot water and clean bathrooms.

The RV park also features a new laundromat with plenty of double load washers and dryers as well as fun amenities such as outdoor playground, fames, a huge pool, 5 hiking trails, and much more.  They also offer seasonal lots where you can leave you can leave your camper all-year on your site.  So if you are looking for a great family and pet friendly RV destination look no further than the Lake Monroe Village.  You will want to call ahead for reservations and we would love to hear about your visit!

Walmart RVing

Most of us have been there, you have high hopes of making it to your RV destination before dusk only to get stuck in traffic, find a cute little roadside diner you had to try, or have to deal with a flat tire. Whatever the case, now you are not going to make it and have no campsite reservations nearby. Luckily I discovered a little RV secret and that is Walmart camping. Yes you heard that right, camping in the Walmart parking lot! Most Walmart stores offer free overnight parking for RV’s in their RV walmartpmdesignated parking spots. Now this is obviously “dry camping” as they don’t have electricity, water, or dump stations so you will have to use your own generator and find another dump station.

This is also handy for those full time RVers who are trying to save a bit of money along the way. Instead of paying for campsite fees along your journey just find a Walmart on your route (that shouldn’t be hard) and ask the manager if they allow RV parking. With the average cost of an overnight RV site running around $50 you could save a whopping $1,500 by simply staying at Walmart for 30 out of 365 days in the year! Plus another obvious but often overlooked benefit is that you are super close to any supplies, ingredients, goodies, etc that you could possibly need.

So don’t forget on your next adventure save a few bucks and find an RV friendly Walmart to park your ride.

A Great First Trip of the Season

I know that it certainly doesn’t seem like it with this horrendous weather but camping season is right around the corner. And with that it’s time to plan your first adventure of the new season. And while there are many wonderful campgrounds around here (especially our very own here at Walnut Ridge) I would suggest heading a bit south for your first trip to try and stay a little warmer! One of the most highly praised RV campground that I would recommend as well is Bald Mountain Camping Resort in Hiawassee, Georgia.

baldmountainNot only is the cities name fun to say but the campground offers a plethora of amenities such as an RV supply store, a personal escort to site, a dump station, cable services, DVD rentals, fishing supplies, laundry, paddle boats, showers, and so much more. With 300 total spaces and an average cost of only $35 a night this is equivalent to a resort on wheels! In addition to being clean and well cared for the campground offers fun for the entire family with a lake, a swimming pool, a game room, mini golf, and exciting planned activities.

So head on down to the Peach State and make your first exploration some fun in the sun!

Canada Crossing

While there are many wonderful campgrounds and sites to see here in the U.S. I think that visiting some of the rustic and majestic attractions in Canada is a must do. Not only do they have the awe inspiring Niagra Falls with many wonderful campsites close by but there are also many great fishing locations and not to mention the breath taking sights to behold in Nova Scotia. But before you pack up the RV and load the family in the car there are some things that you will need to know before crossing into our neighbor of the north.

canadianflagBy now most of you know that you must now have a passport to enter into Canada along with another form of ID. If you are like many of us and travel with your pet make sure that you have a veterinarian’s certificate showing a description of the animal along with proof of a recent rabies vaccine. Also know that radar detectors are illegal in Canada so make sure to leave that behind for this trip. In order to save some time crossing into Canada and prevent waiting at the border for possibly hours you can check the border wait times online. They will tell you how long to expect once you reach the border.

Also you may be surprised to find out that you can only bring a small amount of alcohol across the border equivalent to 2 bottles of wine or one case of beer. There are locked units that you can leave any excess in to pick up on your way out. You must also declare all weapons even switchblade knives and replica firearms. In addition to declaring firearms you also have to declare any meats, fruits, plants, or vegetables that you are bringing into the country because some might pose a threat to Canada’s agriculture.

Despite the newer restrictions I would highly suggest venturing North for an adventure of a lifetime and sights that you wouldn’t normally see in the good ole U.S.

When You Just Can’t Get Away

In today’s down economy and in our everyday busy life we all too often find it hard to pull ourselves away for a long weekend or to escape for a vacation. We stare longingly at our parked RV’s and daydream about finding that perfect campground where your kids can play, your dog backyardcampingcan run, and you can fully relax. Well don’t let not having enough time stop you from making the best of your situation and even more importantly memories with your family.

Think about it, what is it that you actually enjoy? You enjoy spending time with your family, sitting around a fire, playing games, snuggling up in the RV, drinking a glass of wine, and talking into the wee hours. Well if you have a backyard and a bit of imagination you can use your RV and make your own camping experience. All it takes it tearing yourself away from all the technology, setting up a backyard fire pit, and supplying all the fix-in’s to make s’mores. Don’t let your RV just sit there, indulge in a little “stay cation” right in your own backyard. Before you know it you’ll forget where you are and start to feel just like you feel when you get away.

Brown County: A Cultural Place in a Small Town Space

We often get asked for recommendations of places to see and things to do while traveling with your RV and while there is always the typical answer of Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon, or The Great Lakes did you know that there is a wonderful destination much closer? Brown County State park has just as much to offer as many of the more popular destinations. It is the perfect place to take the family for the weekend and if offers year browncountybridgeround camping capability. They have a swimming pool that is open seasonally as well as a playground in the park. If you are interested in horse back riding they have The Saddle Barn that offers guided trail rides as well as pony rides for the kids. With two large lakes located within the park you can enjoy the ample fishing or even ice fishing in the winter.

If the weather is bad or you are looking for a change of pace Brown County also offers an array of art related interests. Brown County is even known as the Art Colony of the Midwest shown by the Brown County Art Gallery. Along with that there is a thriving music and theater scene as well as multiple festivals held in town throughout the year.

Don’t forget that you don’t need to go far to see and experience a great get-away. Sometimes the most fun you can have is also the most simple.
