Protecting Your RV Tires This Winter

Putting good tires on your RV is most definitely an investment. And while it is undoubtedly a worthwhile investment you don’t want to throw that investment rv tiresout the window by letting your tires ruin or wear during the cold winter months. There are a few things that you can do to help protect your investment and allow a speedy de-winterizing.

The first thing you can do is make a small investment in canvas wheel covers. Not only do they help to protect your wheels against the cold and the elements but it also helps shield your tires against the damaging UV rays of the sun. If you choose to not use wheel covers then at least before storing for the winter apply a rubber protectant product such as Armor-All on your tires.

To help prevent flattening of your tire on one side, many experts recommend rotating your tires every few weeks. It is also suggested that you place a wooden plank or another insulating barrier beneath each tire. For safety reason it is recommended that you chock the wheels to prevent accidental movement.

Just taking these small steps during the winter can help save you time and money in the long run.

Winter Time RVing

With some of the year round RV’s you have the ability to enjoy your RV even throughout the cold winter months. With that being said there are some extra precautions that you need to take for winter time RVing during the winter months to keep yourself safe and your RV in tip-top shape.

Tips for RVing in the winterThe first thing to keep in mind is protecting yourself and your family from carbon monoxide poisoning. The occurs especially in the winter when people are using their furnaces and portable heaters. Winter time RVers need to take special precaution from exhaust leaks from a vehicle or generator, improper use of a portable gas powered heater, of malfunctioning LP gas appliances. In addition it is an absolute necessity to have a carbon monoxide detector in your RV. Before the winter months begin be sure to check the batteries to ensure full protection.

For those of you RVing in the winter time in RV’s with slides you need to take special precaution when putting your slides in. You want to make sure that all of the snow is removed from the top of the slides to help prevent any issues with the track or the seal. The best way I have found to do this is by using a long broom to brush away all of the snow.

If you are not planning on moving your RV during the snowy months then adding a skirt around the bottom of the rig can help keep it warm. I like to add foam board insulation to the back of the skirting for some extra insulation.

If you have any other winter RVing tips we’d love to hear them!

The Benefits of a Fifth Wheel Vs. a Motorhome

There seems to be an ongoing debate as to which recreational vehicle is best… either a motor-home or a fifth wheel? While there are certainly advantages to owning a motor-home I think in the end most people can agree that a fifth wheel is the way to go. One of the biggest reasons to consider a fifth wheel above all others is cost!
MorothomevsfifthwheelpmCompared to a motor-home the cost of a fifth wheel is considerably cheaper even when you factor in the tow vehicle cost. In addition to saving a lot of money you are also gaining a lot of space in a fifth wheel compared to a motor home. Triple slide outs are common for a fifth wheel and while many motor-homes do have slides not many provide as many or as much additional footage gained by these slide outs. With all of this extra space in the fifth wheel it goes to reason that there is also more storage space. This means you can take more of the comforts from home with you. Another factor to consider is safety. When traveling in a motor-home often times the passengers are not buckled in and can be injured by flying furniture or being thrown in the case of a sudden stop or accident. On the other hand those who pull a fifth wheel are usually safe and secure in their truck with air bags.
Last but not least motor-homes are more difficult to service than say your tow truck. If something breaks down in your tow vehicle you can usually pull into any service station to get some help. To service a motor-home is not quite as easy and often times the lifts and equipment that most standard service centers have cannot hold such a large vehicle. Bottom line if you are looking for convenience, space, affordability, and storage space a fifth wheel is the way to go.

MOR/ryde for a Better Ride

For any of you that have ever towed anything I’m sure you’ve experienced the jumping and pulling of a trailer and felt as if you were off-roading on some backwoods terrain. Suspension performance is so essential in ensuring a smooth drive as well as protecting your unit from wear and tear going down the road. To offset this ever present traveling issue we now carry the MOR/ryde system in many of our units. This suspension system increases dynamic axle travel by up to 4 inches.

morryde2This allows the suspension to raise and lower with the bumps in the road. It also utilizes a large rubber piece to lessen the shock to your RV. The MOR/ryde system has been named best in class for suspension travel. Other brands use an air bag system which often leak and works on a vertical action which doesn’t address the real problem. So if you are looking for a smoother trip, improved tow ability, and protection for your RV from road shock this system is ideal.

The New Definition of Sleeping on the Couch

The term “sleeping on the couch” tends to have a negative connotation. Whether it be from the blatant sexual innuendo or the fact that the couch is looked upon as an incredibly uncomfortable place to sleep it is not a place people wish to be. The RV industry was not immune to this distaste as the pull out couch was never the first place people chose to sleep… in fact most of the time it was the person who pulled the short straw that was forced to sleep on the comfortless, back breaking bed.

jiffy23Thankfully these pull out beds have come a long way from the paper thin mattresses with metal bars jutting through. Many of our units now come equipped with jiffy beds. These easy to assemble couches use very thick cushions that pull out to form a pillow top type bed. Some of these come in one piece pull outs while others come in two pieces (as shown). This has eliminated the ever expected fight as to who has to sleep on the pull out. Now when you are banished to the couch you can revel in the fact that you’ll be getting a full and comfortable nights sleep!
