Out of Sight, Out of Mind will cost you: Regular Roof Maintenance

Roof replacing can be a costly and time consuming repair. It can also be a very preventable one if you keep up on regular maintenance and cleaning. It is simple to do and could help save you hundreds of dollars later on. All too often people tend to ignore what they cannot see so it is important to get up on your roof or have a certified technician check it at least a couple times a year. While you’re up there you rubberroofdamagewill want to check to see if there are any leaks or cracks in your sealant. You will need to look around the entire perimeter of the roof as well as the air conditioner and all vents. If you notice that the sealant (dicor) is cracking or wearing thin you will need to apply another layer to keep the seal. If this is your third time or so you might need to scrape off the previous layers just so you have a good seal.

Another way to help maintain the stability of your roof is to keep a cover on it during the cold months or when you are not using it. This helps keep water from just sitting on top of your roof and keeps the dicor and rubber roof out of the elements whenever possible. This allows for less wear on the seals and therefore less maintenance involved.

Cleaning your roof on a regular basis also helps to keep your roof in good shape. By using a professional rubber roof cleaner you can rid your roof of road grime and help preserve the life of your roof.

If you follow all of these helpful hints and avoid low over-passes you should be able to keep your roof in tip top shape and save yourself money and hassle!

The Dangers of For Sale by Owner

Driving down the road one day you see an RV for sale by owner so you decide to take a look. The outside of the unit appears to be in decent shape and it doesn’t look too old. Then you see the price tag and it certainly looks appealing! But don’t get too caught up in the too good to be true because chances are it is.

spendingmoneyThere are so many risks involved when you are buying from an individual. For starters you have no way of knowing if the previous owner properly winterized the unit each winter. Also an individual cannot provide financial assistance or accept a trade. But the biggest risk you are taking is that you are purchasing this RV without any warranty or protection. You are agreeing to take the unit as is which you should assume means that nothing works. While the price may seem enticing you should also remember that there are some costly repairs that you may be facing that could negate the low cost of your investment.

For example to replace an RV refrigerator could cost you upwards of $1,200 and if it needs an entire new rubber roof you are looking at a staggering $5,000 and up to repair. In the end your “good deal” could end up costing you more headache, time, hassle, and most importantly money in the end.

Making a more Homey, Home Away from Home

I personally love the way that many of the RV’s are decorated anymore but there is still part of me that wants to make my own unique, to give it a bit of flare that makes it stand apart from the rest. I have come up with some easy and handy decorating tips that will make your home away from home feel more like….. well home.

vinylletteringI love the idea of vinyl lettering on the interior walls. These can say anything from your last name to a personal saying or quotation. I love how these really can change the look and decor of the room without adding any bulkiness to your already precious space. Plus they can let you express yourself and your family.

You can also add your own touches to the decor by adding eye catching throw pillows or blankets to the sofa. Or you spice up the bathroom by adding a fun shower curtain. Throw rugs also add a pop of color and come in handy when you are trying to keep the carpets clean.

For a more permanent decor overhaul you can paint the walls a vibrant shade. I like the idea of having an accent wall that you paint, I made mine the wall that the bed is against to draw your eyes to the open space. I have also seen where people will paint their counter tops in their RV’s especially if they are chipped or an outdated style.

We’d love to see any new or inspiring decor that you have added to your RV!

A Reason to Winterize

So you just got a RV? Congratulations! I’m sure there are so many places you plan to go and things you plan to see. But a word of precaution, without winterizing your RV over the winter you might be stuck here in good ole Indiana come spring time waiting for your unit to be repaired. Our parts and accessories store offers all you’ll need and more to get your RV winter ready and keep you on track for all of your spring time adventures.

If you plan on winterizing your RV by yourself this year there are a few things that you will need to get started. First of all you will need anti-freeze. Now this isn’t your typical toxic vehicle anti-freeze. This is the pink, non-toxic anti-freeze specifically made for RV’s SONY DSCand their water systems. And while you may see the pink anti-freeze on sale at Walmart or another big retailer chances are theirs is only effective until -25 degrees below zero. We all know that some of these harsh Indiana winters can produce temperatures below that with windchill and if you use the -25 then you are out of luck when your pipes freeze. Here at Walnut Ridge we only sell anti-freeze that is effective until -50 degrees below zero to ensure that your rv stays freeze free and unharmed during the dead of winter.

An RV cover is often one of the most important and yet most often overlooked aspect of winterizing your RV. With our new triple layered Tyvek covers it protects the outside and therefore the inside of your unit from all leaks and wear. In addition to the mainframe cover it is suggested that you use tire covers as well. These covers will protect from ultra-violet light as well as keep air pressure maintained and tires clean.

We all know how important it is to keep your RV in tip top shape and by implementing these winterizing tips into your routine you will prevent some major issues. Also remember that if you can’t or do not want to winterize your RV yourself our service department would be more than happy to do that for you. The amount it costs to have done is a fraction of what it would cost to repair so don’t wait too long.

Keeping Your RV Clean

For many of us I know that our RV is our pride and joy and we want to show that in every way we can. One of the best ways that we can take care of our investment is to keep the interior and exterior of our RV’s as clean as possible. The easiest and most effective ways to do this is by using the Gel-gloss RV wash and wax to wash your unit. This solution cleans without streaking or water spotting and it contains a conditioning agent which will not remove or damage the original shine.

camco_pro-tec_rubber_roofAnother exterior portion of your RV that you need to pay special attention to is the roof. By using a Camco RV Pro-Tec Rubber Roof Care System you can not only protect your rubber roof against the elements but minimize future maintenance issues as well. This system includes one gallon of rubber roof cleaner and one gallon of rubber roof protectant. This is important to do on a regular basis and a smart idea to do before the winter months are upon us.

And last but not least you’ll want to keep the interior of your unit looking like new. The best way to accomplish this is by using a professional strength cleaner such as Bio-Kleen Amazing Cleaner. This is truly the clean everything product. It lifts dirt and stains from vinyl and fabric and can also remove mold and mildew stains on canvas. It is perfect for the pet lover as it lifts and removes pet stains on carpet or fabric as well. The best part is that it is non-toxic, non-aerosol, and biodegradable so you can use it anytime.

Remember one of the best ways to protect and prolong the beauty of your RV is to keep it clean and sparkling. Not only will you have your RV longer but you’ll be proud to be pulling such a sharp looking vehicle.

(And remember that all of these products can be purchased in our service and accessories store or in our online store)
