Fun Experiments to Do In The Super Cold Weather

With most kids having an extended Christmas break and with the roads being too hazardous to travel there are a lot of families snowed in frozenbubpmtogether. While this can be maddening at times, especially if you have nothing to do it is also a great opportunity to do some fun and educational projects with your kids. Here are a few of my favorite cold weather activities that you can try and in the process make memories with your little ones.

The first one requires very cold temperatures (much like we are having now). All you need is a pot full of boiling water and a person willing to brave the chilly temperature. Simply throw the pot of boiling water in the air and watch as the water turns to snow and ice crystals before it even touches the ground.

A fun and tasty treat to try in the cold snow is making your own maple syrup candy. To do this mix heated butter and syrup together (following this recipe) and let it cool. Once it is completely cooled you can pour it onto fresh, clean snow and it will harden into a candy with the consistency of taffy. Yum!

Another fun experiment that requires temperatures to be no higher than 9 degrees Fahrenheit and that is freezing bubbles. While we generally think of blowing bubbles as a summertime past-time it can be just as fun in the harsh winter weather as well. The trick to blowing the bubbles is to aim the bubbles upwards so that by the time they hit the ground they have time to freeze. This is even more impressive if you have colored bubble mixture.

Last but not least is another fun and yummy treat that you can make using snow is homemade ice-cream. You will need milk, vanilla, sugar, and of course snow and follow this recipe. The result is a delicious ice-cream like dessert that the kids will have fun making!
