Embracing the Giving Season

All too often as we drive off an interstate exit ramp, through a busy intersection, or into a populated city we see a person standing off to the side holding a sign that says something to the effect of being homeless or hungry and to please help. And while I always want to set a good example for my kids I sometimes don’t have any cash on me or feel awkward about just handing money out when I’m not 100% sure where it is going.

homeless-manSo I was very excited when I came across this wonderful idea of blessing bags. What it entails is getting a large ziploc bag or grocery bag and filling it with essential items. These can range from deodorant, granola bars, to soap, toothpaste, fruit cups, and bottled water. It is a great thing to get the kids to help put together so they feel involved in the process. I try to keep 4-5 of these at least in my car at all times and more when we are planning a trip.

Now instead of giving money I am able to give something that I know will help. I feel like this is a great way to make a difference and teach my children about the importance of giving.
